Clean & Climb - May 25, 2008

Each year on the week-end that follows the Victoria Day holiday weekend Free Spirit Tours has a tradition. It's called "Clean & Climb" and this year will be the event's 8th year running.

Free Spirit Tours, a local adventure tour company, encourages volunteers to come out and donate some of their time by helping to pick up some of the garbage that has accumulated in the Metcalfe Rock area. In return for a couple hours of work, rock climbing and caving opportunities are offered as a reward.

All are welcomed; young and old, climbers and hikers, environmentalists and naturalists and those who have never been to the area before. To add incentive to giving up part of your day - local sponsors pitch in with prizes as well. Some of these are Squire John's, Red Devil Sports, Skiis & Biikes and Collingwood's A&P.

Blue Mountain 4 Seasons, a local landscaping company, donates their trucks, wheelbarrows and other gear to help collect and dispose of the garbage. Last year they donated a full ton of wood chips to spread along the trail to help reduce the erosion that was occurring.

We look forward to starting off the summer season with this event as its always a positive experience for everyone who comes out!

Beaver River Cleanup - June 1, 2008

Just as the Metcalfe Rock area needs to be cleaned up, so too does the Beaver River. However, what's different about this cleanup is that it's logs and fallen trees that we're trying to clear, rather than garbage.

Every spring sees the Beaver River with loads of new logjams created by the shifting of ice and snow. Last year from Kimberley to Heathcote there were approximately 11 logjams in total. Clearing them and allowing for easy access can assure paddlers they're going to have a pleasant and tranquil trip instead of one of frustration and exhaustion.

Volunteers who come out to help should be prepared to get wet and dirty as this is quite the task. But the rewards are worth it! At the end of the day we head back to Free Spirit Tours' home base where there's a bar-b-que and prizes are given away by local sponsors.
